A beginning drawing class is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of drawing through hands-on practice and conceptual exploration. The focus on building observational skills, understanding formal dynamics of drawing, and applying basic techniques to represent objects and scenes.

Core Focus Areas

  • Observational skills: Learning to draw from direct observation or reference.
  • Exploring line, shape, value (light and shadow), proportion, perspective, and composition
  • Materials & techniques: Introduction to pencil, covering contour, gesture, cross-contour, hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and scumbling
  • Perspective: Study of linear, overlapping, and atmospheric perspective to create depth
  • Value & form: Using tonal shading to model three-dimensional forms and convey spatial relationships

In short, a beginning drawing class is both a technical and conceptual introduction to the art of drawing, equipping students with the skills to observe, represent, and interpret visual forms while developing their own expressive voice.
