Oil Painting Color Theory and Mixing with Vivian Leung

Friday, February 13 from 11AM-2PM at the Center

Class Fee: $75

LESSON CONTENT:

If you struggle with procuring the correct color when painting, look no further! In this workshop, we’ll talk about complimentary, warm/cool colors, and how light affects our perception of colors. There will be a lecture (15%) followed by a demo (15%) and then open discussion & guided self-practice (70%). We will create our own color wheel/chart and then try to create the colors based on a photograph (feel free to bring your own too). This workshop will focus on experimentation and the exploration of colors with oil paint as the medium. Important tips and tricks when using certain colors will also be mentioned. Please come ready with curiosity and any questions you have about colors!

Please bring your own lunch or snacks, we will have break time around 12:30pm.

MATERIALS/Supply List:

The instructor will supply canvases, all oil paint mediums, including mineral spirits, gel and linseed oil. Students must bring their own brushes. Any brush made for mixed media (oil, acrylic, gouache) will suffice but oil brushes work best. Flat and filbert brushes are great. Each student should bring 2 brushes minimum: a bigger one about the width of your thumb (1.5 – 2 cm or .5 -1 inch) and a smaller one the width of your pinky finger (.5 cm or .25 inch).

BIO INFORMATION:

Born and raised in Elk Grove, Vivian went to San Jose State University for an engineering degree and shortly after graduating in 2019, I began training at the ArtHub Academy in Saratoga under Jose Luis Andrade Leon. Her main focus was developing strong traditional fundamentals and additionally experimenting with digital art formsin 2d and 3d software. After a few years of study, she became a teacher herself at ArtHub in 2023, guiding children, teens, and adults to help them improve their drawing and painting skills. She returned to Elk Grove in 2025 and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm for art and learning to the community.
