About the Judge

Michelle Andres is a contemporary American oil painter and writer who draws from nature to celebrate joy and hopefulness in our often-challenging world. Previously working with abstraction and poetry, she currently focuses on landscapes and items of extreme curiosity. A life-long creative and California Native, Andres’ paintings examine the intimate relationship between the natural elements of our rivers, rural expanses, solitary buildings and parklands. Inspired by Nicholas de Stael, Raimonds Staprans , Stuart Shils and others she works through layers of oil paint, attentive to line, light, texture and color, she explores her world. The landscape is observed and recorded in a flattened fashion. Several layers of paint chronicle the history of the picture, with little attempt to hide the path. Andres purposely doesn’t tell the entire story, she encourages the viewer to remember their own. Andres has studied with painters such as Katherine Chang-Liu, Heather Wilcoxin, Carl Hayward, Skip Lawrence, Sandy Ostrau, Gage Opedenbrouw, Craig Stephens and draftsman, Salvatore Victor. She is represented by Aerena Gallery in Sonoma, Healdsburg and Napa, Wilde Meyer Gallery in Scottsdale and Tucson and Fire and Rain Galleries in Folsom. Her work appears in private and corporate collections throughout the U.S. and abroad.
